CHAPTER 12

Agnes Swift was a spry eighty-something-year-old woman with short curly grey hair. The only thing that gave her age away was her saggy jowls. Age was no longer determined by hair color. There’d been many young women hikers who’d come to Happy Trails Campground and actually had their hair dyed gray for fashion.

Beat the heck out of me. Before I owned the campground, I’d spent thousands of dollars covering any sort of aging process money could buy, a luxury I had not been able to afforded in a long time. So when I pulled the visor down and took a look at myself in the mirror on the drive to the hospital, I realized what extravagant spa treatments could hide when I saw my crow’s feet were starting to deepen.

“You’re beautiful.” Hank tossed his hand in the air, swiping the edge of the visor and knocking it up. “Now, let’s put on a happy face for Granny, and let’s not give her any ideas that something is going on.”

“She knew about the case though, right? Wasn’t she in there when Al brought Bobby Ray and…” My words drifted off after I realized she had gone into the hospital before Ricky was found dead. “Right. I won’t say a word.” I used my fingers to zip my lips.

We headed through the sliding glass doors of the small hospital, and I followed Hank over to the flower cart. The pale walls of the hospital gave way to florescent lights. The old, yellowing tile had seen much better days, but it appeared clean and shiny. There was no doubt this hospital could use a good makeover, but being a holdover unit, I was sure they didn’t want to invest the money into it.

There wasn’t a gift shop, but the bouquet Hank picked out would brighten Agnes’s day. Anything from Hank would put a great big smile on her face.

“Let’s pick two.” I picked out another one, and Hank paid for them.

“Granny’s room might not be big enough for two.” Hank brought his bouquet up to his nose and gave it a sniff as we walked down the hall.

“This one is for the nurses,” I told him. “We want Agnes to be getting the best possible care. I’m not above a bribe, and we love flowers.”

The sound of our steps hitting the tile as we approached the desk caused the nurses to look up.

“Good morning.” I looked both of them in the eyes. “We are here to see Agnes Swift.”

“She’s in room 105.” The petite blond nurse had a button nose and pink lips. She wore a blue pair of scrubs. She had on fake lashes that would make Crissy Lane swoon.

“Thank you for taking such good care of her,” I told the nurses and extended the flowers. “We hope these brighten your day.”

“That’s so sweet of y’all.” The young lady took them. The older one got up from in front of the computer and headed to a room behind them with a plaque on the door reading Staff Only.
